Unit 2.

1. Present Continuous – Affirmative

We use the Present Continuous to talk about:

- actions happening now
- things happening at the moment of speaking
- temporary actions

Structure

Subject + am / is / are + verb + -ing

You can also use short forms:

- I’m listening to music.
- She’s talking to her friend.
- They’re playing computer games.

Spelling Rules for -ing

1. Most verbs → add -ing

play → playing
read → reading

2. Verbs ending in -e → remove -e and add -ing

make → making
dance → dancing

3. Short verbs ending in consonant-vowel-consonant → double the last letter

run → running
swim → swimming

Signal Words

These words often show the Present Continuous:

- now
- at the moment
- right now
- today

Examples
- She is doing her homework now.
- We are learning English at the moment.
- They are playing outside right now.

2. Present Continuous – Negative

We use the Present Continuous negative to say that something is not happening now or not happening at the moment.

Structure
Subject + am / is / are + not + verb + -ing

You can use shot forms:
- I’m not sleeping now.
- She isn’t listening to music.
- We aren’t playing outside.
- They aren’t watching TV at the moment.

3. Present Continuous – Questions and Short Answers

We use Present Continuous questions to ask about actions happening now or at the moment.

Am / Is / Are + subject + verb + -ing ?

Short Answers


WH- Questions

We use WH- questions in the Present Continuous when we want more information about an action happening now.

4. Present Simple vs Present Continuous


We use the Present Simple and the Present Continuous to talk about the present, but they are different.

Present Simple

We use the Present Simple for:
- habits and routines
- things we do regularly
- facts and general truths

- I play football every Saturday.
- She walks to school.
- We live in Hungary.

Signal words
always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day

Present Continuous

We use the Present Continuous for:
- actions happening now
- temporary actions
- happening at the moment of speaking

- I am doing my homework now.
- She is watching TV at the moment.
- They are playing in the garden.

now, at the moment, today, right now

5. Must

We use must to talk about:
- rules
- obligations
- something that is very important to do

Structure
Subject + must + verb (base form)


💬 Examples
- I must do my homework.
- You must be careful.
- We must arrive on time.
- She must help her parents.
- They must wear helmets.

6. Subject and Object Pronouns

Pronouns are short words that replace nouns (names, people, animals, things).

👤 Subject Pronouns

We use subject pronouns as the subject of the sentence.
They tell us who does the action.

🎯 Object Pronouns

We use object pronouns after verbs or prepositions.
They tell us who receives the action.

Subject vs Object Pronouns

💬 Examples
- She likes him.
- They help us.
- I can see her.
- He plays with them.
- We know you.

💡 Tip
👉 Subject pronouns usually come before the verb.
👉 Object pronouns usually come after the verb.
