1. Past simple: be

The past simple form of “to be” is:
➡️ was / were

We use it to talk about:
- the past
- things that happened before now

✅ Affirmative Forms

- I wasn’t at home yesterday.
- She wasn’t tired.

These words often show the Past Simple:
- yesterday
- last week
- last year
- two days ago
- in 2024
💬 Examples
- We were at the cinema yesterday.

💡 Tip
Use:
was → I / he / she / it
were → you / we / they

2. Past Simple – Regular Verbs (Affirmative)

We use the Past Simple to talk about actions that happened in the past and are finished now.

Structure
Subject + verb + -ed

⚙️ Spelling Rules

1. Most verbs → add -ed

2. Verbs ending in -e → add only -d

3. Verbs ending in consonant + "y"
→ change "y" to "i" and add -ed

4. Short verbs ending in consonant-vowel-consonant
→ double the last letter and add -ed

💬 Examples
- I played tennis yesterday.
- She danced at the party.
- We studied English last night.
- He stopped the car.
- They watched TV after dinner.

3. Past Simple – Negative Sentences 🚫

We use the Past Simple negative to say that something did not happen in the past.

🏗 Structure
Subject + did not + verb (base form)

Short form: didn’t

💬 Examples
- I didn’t play tennis yesterday.
- She didn’t dance at the party.
- We didn’t study last night.
- They didn’t watch TV.

⚠️ Important Rule
After did / didn’t, the verb is always in the base form.

✅ She didn’t play football.
❌ She didn’t played football.

4. Past Simple – Questions and Short Answers ❓

We use Past Simple questions to ask about actions that happened in the past.

🏗 Structure
Did + subject + verb (base form)?

💬 Examples
- Did you play football yesterday?
- Did she watch the film?
- Did they visit London last year?
- Did he clean his room?

Short Answers

🏗 Structure
Question word + did + subject + verb (base form)?

💬 Examples
- What did you watch on TV?
- Where did they play football?
- When did she clean her room?
- Why did he walk home?
- Who did you help yesterday?

⚠️ Important Rule
After did, the verb is always in the base form.
